I hate apples!

No, not really. I’m not sick of them yet (maybe sick of counting them). I’m averaging about one a day, which will not be enough, of course, if I want to reach 500 for the year.

No marathon?

July 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

Unfortunately, I’m on the brink of dropping out of my marathon training. After running the St. Louis half-marathon in April one of my knees was acting like it was 115 years old. In fact, I moseyed around like I was that old for a couple of days. Well, last week, on a 5 mile run the same knee started to hurt. I thought that if I gradually increased the mileage and followed a legitimate, proven training program, I could avoid knee problems.

Running is hard on the knees and ankles. Right now, my knee if fine on short runs so it’s not affecting my day-to-day life, which is most important. I’ve said all along, I like running, but I don’t LOVE running, so this isn’t a major blow for me. I may try one more long run on Sunday. If it goes okay, I might proceed.

Half Marathon Training Begins!

June 26, 2008 · 4 Comments

On Monday, my wife and I began an official training program to run our 2nd half marathon. On Sunday, September 14th we’ll be running the Lewis & Clark Half Marathon in St. Charles, MO.

The program we’re following, catered to the novice, can be found here. Credit goes to Hal Higdon; it’s his program. The next paragraph was news to me. I had never heard of this guy (pictured). From Wikipedia:Hal Higdon

“Hal Higdon is an American writer and runner. He has contributed to Runner’s World magazine longer than any other writer. He is the author of 34 books, including the best-selling Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide. He has worked as a freelance writer since 1959, and has written a variety of subjects including a children’s book that was made into an animated feature. He ran eight times in the United States Olympic Trials and won four world masters championships. He is one of the founders of the Road Runners Club of America. (RRCA).”

So far, I’m right on track. I have switched up my routine to run in the mornings instead of the evening. I had been getting up at 5:45 every day (yes, even weekends). Since starting this program, I’m getting up at 5:30 and running first thing. We’ll see if I can stick to this schedule.

I’ve fallen off the running wagon.

June 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I have taken an unscheduled break from jogging. I am going to have a tough time hitting 1000 miles for the year, unless I start some kind of marathon training schedule. I set the bar pretty high based on my past running habits, but I’m still hopeful I can make a “run” for it.

I was ready to jog this evening, but it’s raining. I know that serious runners would not let a little water keep them from pounding the pavement. What a wuss, I am!! I’ll take another peek outside when I’m through here.

Our garage is really shaping up. Since we decided not to have a garage sale, I’ve been slowing moving junk out via Freecycle and Goodwill and it’s looking a lot less cluttered. I have three ceiling mounted bike lifts coming this week from Amazon that’s sure to make a huge difference. Right now, we have 6 bicycles (3 adult & 3 childrens) taking up a lot of floor space.

From now on, when I report on the 100 Thing Challenge, I’m going to include pictures of what I acquire and what a get rid of. It should be more interesting. I can’t wait to get that going, but it will have to wait ’til tomorrow.
